The United Nations General Assembly voted to adopt a new map that more accurately depicts Africa's size. The U.S. was the only country to vote against the map, while six other countries abstained.

The United Nations has adopted the Equal Earth projection, correcting centuries of map distortion.

In its explanation of vote, India reiterated that its sovereign territory, including the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, must be depicted according to the country’s official map.
